On April 16, 2026, a seminar titled “Silent Crisis: Loneliness Among University Students” was held within the Department of Educational Sciences by Prof. Dr. Yücel Öksüz.
During the seminar, the issue of loneliness, which has become increasingly visible among university students, was discussed. Prof. Dr. Yücel Öksüz emphasized that loneliness should be considered not only as an individual experience but also as a multidimensional process closely related to social environment, academic life, and digital habits.
In the presentation, it was highlighted that the decrease in face-to-face communication, especially with the rise of social media use, may deepen feelings of loneliness among students. In addition, factors such as adaptation to a new environment, academic expectations, and lack of social support were noted as contributing elements.
Öksüz pointed out that loneliness may negatively affect students’ academic motivation, psychological well-being, and overall life satisfaction in the long term. In this context, the importance of strengthening social relationships, participating in university activities, and seeking psychological support when needed was emphasized.
The seminar also included suggestions for enhancing students’ sense of belonging within the university environment, and stressed the importance of recognizing and appropriately addressing loneliness. The program concluded with a Q&A session.
